Dick Metz and the Legacy of Surf History: SHACC’s Next Chapter
January 18, 2026
Dick Metz has spent decades protecting surf history. Now SHACC is entering its next chapter.
Legendary surfer Dick Metz opened The Surf Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC) in 1999. It moved to San Clemente in 2004. SHACC has been referred to as the “Smithsonian” for the surf culture. Last December, SHACC closed escrow on an historic building at 239 Broadway downtown Laguna Beach. The move is funded by donations and the sale of the San Clemente property, with strong community and industry backing.
🎥 SHACC Executive Director Jeff Alter explains what the future of the heritage and culture center will look like when it opens summer 2026.
