The Power and Awe of Music
“Playing for Change” was a viral video that roughly 20 years ago had a great message about the power and awe of music and philanthropy. It has been viewed more than 200 million times and it started with the great Ben E. King classic song “Stand by Me,” and it featured musicians from around the world. OC World had the opportunity to interview two visionaries who continue to raise funds to support music and arts programs in schools both locally and globally… Alec Glasser, owner of the Drake Restaurant in Laguna Beach and founder of The Drake Gives, and Jake Groshong, CEO for the “Playing for Change” Foundation.

OC World Receives 2 Nominations the 74th Annual Golden Mike Awards®

OC World is proud to announce that it was selected as a finalist in two categories at this year’s Golden Mike Awards. Recognized for its dedication to excellence in media production, OC World is a finalist in the Best Editing and Best Documentary Long-Form categories.

The Golden Mike Awards celebrate outstanding broadcasting and media production achievements across various genres and formats. Being named a finalist in two categories underscores OC World’s commitment to delivering top-notch content and storytelling.

“The Golden Mike Awards® is one of the oldest broadcast journalism awards show in America, and among the most distinguished with top journalists across America appointed as judges. Unlike most awards contests in which winners are determined by selecting which entry is the ‘best’ among all those submitted in each category, winners of the Golden Mike Awards® must also meet the ‘Standard of Excellence.’” – RTNA

OC World was nominated as a finalist in two categories: “Best Long Form Program or Documentary” for its program on the tragic bicycle accident that launched The Bradley Rofer Foundation, and “Best Editing of a Feature Story, Series or Special” for its program on artist Celia Herrera Rodriquez, whose work reflects ancestral memories that help some indigenous peoples find their way back home.

Both programs were produced by OC World, a nonprofit multimedia company founded by Scott Hays and Dr. Manuel Gomez. Special recognition and gratitude go to OC World’s friends and supporters, including The Keith & Judy Swayne Family Foundation, Marisla Foundation, and Orange County Community Foundation.

The awards were presented by the Radio & Television News Association (RTNA) of Southern California at Universal Hilton Hotel. This year’s honorees for Lifetime Achievement Awards include KFI radio morning host Bill Handel, KCAL reporter Michele Gile, and KTLA reporter Eric Spillman.

UCI Fellowship Program in Development

The Center for Educational Partnerships at UCI and OC World are excited to announce the development of a comprehensive fellowship program tailored for students from the Student Achievement Guided by Experience (SAGE) Scholars Program. This initiative aims to provide valuable experiential learning opportunities for students while fostering a pipeline of talent in the media industry.

The fellowship program will offer students from the SAGE Scholars Program the chance to gain hands-on experience in various aspects of media production. Through mentorship, training, and practical assignments, interns can develop essential skills and insights relevant to their career aspirations.

“We recognize the importance of investing in the next generation of talent. This initiative benefits OC World and the SAGE Scholars Program and provides invaluable opportunities for students to explore their interests and pursue careers in media,” said Scott Hays, OC World Founder and Executive Producer.
